We recently had a patient who was being treated for a non-healing wound. She coincidentally had sustained a corneal abrasion from trauma to the eye one week prior to starting HBOT. She saw opthalmology the morning prior to her first session of HBOT. She was diagnosed by opthalmology with a corneal abrasion and given an antibiotic ointment. She receieved one session of HBOT on Friday. Sunday evening she reported to ER with eye pain, vomiting and was told she ruptured her cornea and has lost vision in that eye. I know corneal abrasion is a contraindication for diving but we did not feel this was a reason to withhold HBOT. Does anyone know more about this diagnosis? Is it possible that HBOT contributed to her corneal tear?
