I'm drafting a policy for the event of an earthquake during a hyperbaric treatment. Does everyone have this type of policy? One of the issues im getting is where to draw the line as to what magnitude is significant enough to abort treatment and to what distance the epicenter is far enough that its not an issue.

Recommendation for areas to consider:• Check potential damage to medical gas plumbing within the walls.• Check potential damage to medical gas plumbing underground or not readily visible.• Contact the chamber manufacturer for recommendations.• Coordinate with the facility maintenance and engineering personnel.• Conduct evaluation and clearance of the monoplace or multiplace chamber(s) prior to initiating hyperbaric operations.

Also, when a tremor is felt, I recommend the chamber operator remove themselves from between the chambers, and then terminate the treatment/s once the initial tremor has stopped. This way you have the patients removed should additional tremor be present…aftershocks.

We live in an earthquake zone here in UT. Operating both monoplace and multiplace. These chambers have different concerns, the monoplace is a ton or so of equipment, loss of head wall gas etc, the patients are probably not at risk for decompression sickness so we can safely decompress and evacuate to a place of safety. The multiplace has different concerns as far as risk for the inside attendant. We have no specific earthquake policy for our department other than the evacuation policy. The hospital has an earthquake policy and we would terminate the treatments in accordance with our evacuation policy then fall in with the hospital emergency proccesses.
