Description

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Medical Director of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Clinic, the Certified Hyperbaric Technologist shall have the duties of the Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) in operating two monoplace hyperbaric chambers and maintaining the chambers within the scope of a CHT.

 

Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) role:

  • Operates the hyperbaric chambers that deliver hyperbaric oxygen to patients as prescribed by the Medical Director or Hyperbaric Medicine Physician
  • Provides safe operations of the hyperbaric oxygen chambers for patients in accordance with established policies and guidelines
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining hyperbaric chambers and related equipment as per manufacturing recommendations
  • At the direction of the Medical Director and the CHT Coordinator, maintains daily, monthly, quarterly and annual logs as recommended by the manufacturing and facility policies and procedures
  • When the CHT Coordinator is not on site, the staff CHT serves as the Hyperbaric Safety Officer for the hyperbaric oxygen facility (completion of an approved Safety Director course required)
  • Maintain and ensure the appropriate use of materials inside and around the hyperbaric oxygen chambers

CHT Essential Duties:

  • Responsible for chambers operations and patient safety during hyperbaric oxygen treatment
  • Interprets and thoroughly understands meter reading in relationship to pressure
  • Performs line-up, shutdown, and all other operations procedures
  • Maintains complete and accurate patient records pertaining to hyperbaric oxygen treatments, including any correspondence with patients
  • Determines and maintains expendable supply requirements
  • Performs maintenance of the hyperbaric chambers and related equipment
  • Conducts and coordinates all levels of system maintenance as required and directed by the Lead CHT
  • Lifts patients or transfers according to the established policies and procedures
  • Attends to all hyperbaric equipment and gases
  • Maintain all facility safety-related standards as required by various licensing and regulatory agencies
  • Ensures department compliance with NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities chapter on hyperbaric facilities and with internal safety policies and procedures
  • Makes recommendations for the departmental safety policies and procedures as appropriate
  • Reviews all department safety incidents, collects information regarding equipment/patient safety, report relevant incidents to the staff and periodically provides in-service training on accident prevention
  • Maintains a safe environment in the hyperbaric facility for patients and staff and uses approved and recognized decompression procedures for all persons with hyperbaric exposure to inert gases
  • Completes quarterly hyperbaric chamber fire safety drills which are tailored to improve staff response to emergencies
  • Serves on the institution safety committee as requested by the hospital leadership
  • Assists in daily operation of the department and performs duties and procedures as directed by the Nurse Manager and/or Medical Director
  • Adheres to all department policies, procedures, and guidelines

Required Education /Experience:

  Minimum high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

  • Completed an approved Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS)or National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT), or Department of Defense introductory course in hyperbaric oxygen team operations pre/post hire
  • Maintains current certification as a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) by the NBDHMT.
    • CHS (“Certified Hyperbaric Specialist”) designation is not accepted
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Infection Control, clinic and safety competencies as required by the institution.
  • Must obtain Acute Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within first 90 days of employment if not already certified
  • Complete initial and annual skills check lists as required by the facility
  • Safety Director Training Course completion (Will be required if not already completed)
  • Hyperbaric Chambers Acrylics Course training

 

‘CHS’ designation is not accepted.
